Abstract:

Carbon membrane can be produced using a wide variety of polymer precursor materials via heat treatment process. A general concept route of precursor selection-preparation-modification-performance analysis platform for the carbon membrane has been proposed to promote the development of carbon membrane material for a wide range of application. The current review considers the recent progress of carbon membrane preparation and the potential applications in gas separation and membrane reactor system. In particular, the current carbon membranes for CO2, N2, and H2 separation are reviewed, along with special emphasis to their membrane precursor materials and the technique used to improve the membrane’s performance. Issues affecting membrane performance such as the preparation method to produce supported carbon membrane are explored aligned with the future research to achieve commercially viable processes. For future perspective, carbon membranes hold significant potential and great promise for further investigation, development, and application.

Synthesis and characterization of supported Phenolic resin/Carbon nanotubes Carbon membranes for gas separation

In this work, separation performance of supported carbon membranes produced from Novolac Phenolic resin as the main precursor and carbon nanotubes as nanofiller were investigated for separation of CO2 from N2 and CH4. Supports were produced by carbonization of Novolac Phenolic resin-activated carbon mixture, and selective layer was coated by dip coating of prepa...

Recent Progress in Zeolite/Zeotype Membranes

This is a comprehensive review of the recent progresses made in the field of zeolite membranes. It describes zeolitic materials and methods of membrane fabrication, followed by a summary of applications for gas separation, pervaporation and separation of liquid mixtures. Special attention is called to polymer mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and membranes based on metal organic frame works (MOFs)....

Recent Developments in Carbon Nanotube Membranes for Water Purification and Gas Separation

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanoscale cylinders of graphene with exceptional properties such as high mechanical strength, high aspect ratio and large specific surface area. To exploit these properties for membranes, macroscopic structures need to be designed with controlled porosity and pore size. This manuscript reviews recent progress on two such structures: (i) CNT Bucky-papers, a non-woven,...
